SCENT YOUR HOME TO SELL

Side view of our beloved Random Thatch, Somerset

With the property market set to become a buyer’s domain once again, house sellers are now looking for more unique ways make their home more appealing to prospective buyers.

House buying is an emotive, psychological experience. While decluttering Marie Kondo style can play a significant role in whether someone wants to buy your home, adding a diffuser or lighting a candle could make all the difference when trying to sell according to Shopify. The report recently revealed that scent marketing has long been used by retailers to improve browsing experiences to create a warm feeling of familiarity, thus making customers feel ‘at home’ and boost sales.

To help determine the most popular scents to showcase your home, Bankrate UK, the mortgage comparison experts, recently conducted a UK study of 2,000 people to discover which scents they find the ‘homeliest’ and most appealing!

I mean we know a beautiful scented candle, diffuser, or an uplifting aromatherapy room spray, can help lift the vibe in a room…

Surprisingly - or not - it seems that, despite spending the last 12 months baking (and eating) sourdough and banana bread, we’re still loving the aroma of fresh bread (indeed where would supermarkets be without it alluring us to eat more simply by one whiff?). Freshly baked bread was the most popular homely scent – coming top in three of five age groups, by 39%. With fresh linen & coffee close behind.

One of the most alluring aromas … our brain rates it higher than our gut!

Fresh lavender appeals to 17.5% for freshness (it’s also antimicrobial did you know?)

Scent Zone Your Home

Taking inspiration from the rising trend of fragrance zoning, recently highlighted by John Lewis in a 2021 beauty trends report, it would appear we all want to go one step further, choosing different aromas to change the mood in different rooms of the house. Woody Oriental (eg sandalwood) was sited as the favourite aroma for the Living Room and Study or Library.
