CANDLE CARE ETIQUETTE

True candle etiquette shows that you know your wicks from your waxes.. We're not judging, much...we're just a bit passionate about paraffin-free candles that burn long and true, and also one that bears a 'significant scent' rich in plant essential oils (and at a high %) as opposed to a cheap synthetic smell. Did you know mineral wax won't burn natural oils well as it gets too hot - so those with paraffin wax will invariably have a synthetic fragrance blend and will be used in a lower percentage, so it's simply not as aromatic. Oh, it's a fine art believe us!

A lot goes into making one candle. I’ve learned this for myself and it’s been a fascinating process! The blend of natural waxes and oils to create a true treasure that burns beautifully in your home (paraffin - similar fumes to diesel petrol - is considered by most experts as a toxin, especially to pets and young lungs), the dimension of the wick to ensure the burn diameter reaches the sides of the glass/vessel (hence always light a new candle for 2 hours to help prevent the 'pooling' of wax) - let alone the effort that goes into packaging a stylish tailor-made box that appeals yet also securely contains glass so it travels well without crushing.  And all for YOU!

DO YOU HAVE TRUE CANDLE ETIQUETTE?

DID YOU KNOW?

So... here's a little light education to get the best from your love of candles... and if you need a little inspiration, I'd suggest a little MOJO...

  1. When lighting for the first time, always burn a new candle for 2 hours to allow the wax to pool evenly for the duration of its burn time.

  2. Do trim the wick before relighting to prevent blackening of the glass. The best candles contain a cotton wick; try to avoid those with a metal wick designed to always stand upright but emit invisible toxic fumes, especially if you have young children and small pets.

  3. Want to seem perfect? Try this! Light a few aromatic candles an hour before any guests arrive to give your home a rush of fragrance you love. Extinguish the flame before they get there and enjoy the praise.

  4. REMEMBER You really DO Get What You Pay For with a luxury high-end candle. You have only to experience an expensive candle to know why it costs more. Firstly, chances are they're hand-poured (ours in GB) and our glass is hand-tinted grey. They're not mass-produced. You’ll find 8-12% fragrance (natural or synthetic) in most prestigious candles, and it’s this ‘throw’ that makes one scent a room even before it’s lit (all our customers and journalist friends have said this to be the case). Cheaper candles generally just have a simpler fragrance construction and contain less than 2% perfume in comparison - whether the base is paraffin (even cheaper) or a natural wax. "A cheap, highly synthetic fragrance can resemble cleaning spray," says friend Roja Dove. "Cheapen the surroundings of your home, and it’s just not as soulful. You can even give your guests a headache. It’s like choosing a piece of furniture: you can do it on the cheap but it won’t have the same effect: functional over fashionable." I say, to love your surroundings and your home you must love the way it smells. That's a fast track to relaxation every time.
