NEW HOME RITUALS WITH SCENT
How to arome the home!
These incense burners by @incausa from a wonderful nearby interiors shop @carosomerset in Bruton, were a recent birthday present from my husband. I love the subtle logo and the beautiful aroma of Palo Santo in these little sticks that is used to clear energy in a room. And it burns so neatly too unlike longer, thin incense.
Palo Santo, or “Holy Wood” in Spanish, is bursera graveolens, a wild tree native from the Yucatán Peninsula to Peru and Venezuela. Bursera graveolens is found in the seasonally dry tropical forests of Mexico, South America and the Galápagos Islands.
I also love burning white sage (also for space energy clearing (maybe you had a bad guest or previous owners). The aroma is quite strong and my kids can’t bear it, but I find it an empowering scent. Originating from Native Americans, the smudging ritual has been traditionally used to safeguard against negativity and dark spirits that may interfere with sleep. Some research suggests that sage contains compounds that could help ease insomnia and soothe anxiety. Vital right now, sage also has antimicrobial properties. This means it keeps infectious bacteria, viruses, and fungi (all positive ions) at bay, by naturally releasing negative ions into the air.
Light an aromatherapeutic candle (one with zero paraffin wax for the sake of your environmental space). Here’s our own relaxing soy/rapeseed candle SLOJO tucked in the photo, with the beautiful aroma of geranium, lavender, laudanum and sandalwood to make you chill.

‘Smudging’
Start smudging with a simple intention of focusing on clearing the negative energy out of your space and mind. Once you have your intention in mind, light the stick of Sage or Palo Santo by holding at a 45 degree angle, pointing the tip down towards the flame of a match. Allow it to catch light & burn for 30 seconds, then blow it out. Now, as the embers burn gently with a trail of smoke, hold the burner up and away from your face, and walk around your space. Go into cupboards, cosy corners. Think positive thoughts and intentions as you move from each of the fours corners of your room. (Keep a small bowl with you to catch any ash). If you’re into Feng Shui, focus your mind’s eye on areas in your home that help promote happiness, security, prosperity and above all health. We could all do with that right now!
